Year 10 — PSHCE

Term 1: Mental and Physical Health

In this unit students will develop their knowledge in mental health and mental illnesses, building resilience and self-esteem, eating disorders, the impact of substance misuse, the impact of smoking and vaping, as well as understanding cancer.

Attitude

Manner, disposition, feeling, approach, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, especially of the mind: a negative attitude; group attitudes.

Personal

Relating to the personal or private parts of someone's life.

Social

Relating to the life, welfare, and relationships of human beings in a community.

Mental Health

The health and well-being of the brain.

Stress

A state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances.

Grief

Sadness and loss following the death or loss of a loved one.

Empathy

Putting yourself in someone else's shoes to feel their emotions.

Sympathy

Feeling for someone who has experienced something negative.

Awareness

Knowledge or perception of a situation or fact.

Term 2: Financial Decision Making

In this unit students will explore the UK economy, effective budgeting, evaluating savings options, comparing the market, credit and borrowing, gambling, fraud and cybercrime.

Personal

Relating to the personal or private parts of someone's life.

Career

An occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress.

Employability

The quality of being suitable for paid work.

Credit card

A small plastic card issued by a bank, building society, etc., allowing the holder to purchase goods or services on credit.

Debit card

A card allowing the holder to transfer money electronically from their bank account when making a purchase.

Unions

The action of joining together or the fact of being joined together, especially in a political or working context.

Employability

The skills and abilities that allow you to be employed.

Tax

A compulsory contribution to the government taken from wages, company profits and added to certain products.

Payslip

A note given to an employee when they have been paid, detailing the amount of pay given, and the tax and insurance deducted.

Term 3: Healthy Relationshios

In this unit students will explore love, relationships and self-respect, assertiveness in relationships, consent and sexual harassment, choosing when to have sex, safe sex, STIs and reproductive health.

Amicable break-up

A break-up where the two individuals stay civil, don't attack each other and respect each other's boundaries.

Pornography

Printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate sexual excitement.

Sexting

The action or practice of sending sexually explicit photographs or messages via mobile phone.

Nudes

The production or distribution of images where the subject is naked.

Domestic abuse

An incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour.

Media

The main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the internet) regarded collectively.

This unit will equip students with the knowledge to make safe and healthy decisions throughout their adult lives with regards to sexual ethics and safety.

Create a supportive community:

Students to understand and follow the law relating to sexual ethics. Students will recognise positive choices, as well as identifying how negative choices may affect others and their community.

Term 4: Preparing for Exams

In this unit students will reflect on Y10 so far, will learn about organisation strategies as well as planning revision, developing revision strategies, finding motivation and maintaining a balance.

Respect

Respect is a way of treating or thinking about something or someone. If you respect your teacher, you admire her and treat her well. People respect others who are impressive for any reason, such as being in authority — like a teacher or police officer.

Active revision

Self-discipline

Having the ability and determination to stick to the goals we set ourselves, even in the face of temptation not to.

Meditation

Focusing on your mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation.

Students will understand the law with regards to relationships and sex. Students will know how to keep themselves safe and will understand how beliefs and opinions should be shared and respected.

Term 5 : Impact of the Media

In this unit students will explore their understanding of the UK media, the differences between positive and negative role models, the impact of the media on body image, and its impact on pornography and mental health. Students will also cover censorship, distortion and fake news.

Safety

The condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury.

Mental Health

The condition of someone's mind and whether or not they are suffering from any mental illness.

To have control or power over how others act, think or behave. To contribute to the thoughts and ideas of others.

Peer pressure

Direct influence on people by peers, to follow by changing their attitudes, values, or behaviours to conform to those of the influencing group.

Social media

Websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

Fake news

Inaccurate, fake and fictional stories created by unscrupulous authors to trick the public into thinking they are true.

Term 6: Careers and Life Skills

In this unit students explore their strengths and interests, while thinking about sixth form and college applications, they will explore apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships, internships and work experience, developing a CV and developing an online identity.

Protective Behaviours (PBs) is a safety awareness and resilience building programme which helps children and adults to recognise any situation where they feel worried or unsafe, such as feeling stressed, bullied or threatened; and explores practical ways

Risk

Expose (someone or something valued) to danger, harm, or loss.
